South Asians with High Blood Pressure; Good News

Data from the independent KYOTO HEART study shows that adding Diovan (valsartan) to conventional treatment to improve blood pressure control may improve cardiovascular outcomes in patients with high blood pressure at high risk of cardiovascular events.

Presented recently at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress in Barcelona, Spain, and published online in the European Heart Journal, the study showed that Diovan* (valsartan) added to conventional treatment, provided a significant 45% relative risk reduction in cardiovascular events,1 including stroke, compared to conventional treatment.

“This study followed high risk patients commonly seen in clinical practice and while the results reinforce that getting blood pressure down is important, choosing the right treatment to get there is vital because some medicines have additional protective benefits,” said Dr. Parmjit Sohal, MD, PhD, CCFP, FCFP, a family physician and a clinical assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C.
Diovan* (valsartan) is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), which is a class of medication used for controlling high blood pressure. It controls high blood pressure by blocking the action of angiotensin II. As a result, the blood vessels dilate and blood pressure is reduced.

Details about the study

A total of 3,031 Japanese patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure either with no treatment or on a previous non-ARB-based regimen and with one or more pre-defined cardiovascular risk factors (e.g. existing diabetes, obesity, smokers, or a history of cardiovascular disease) took part in the study. Patients were randomized to receive either additional treatment with Diovan* (valsartan) or a non-ARB conventional therapy.

The primary study endpoint was a composite of defined cardio- and cerebrovascular events including stroke, myocardial infarction (heart attack), and hospitalization for heart failure or angina (chest pain).2 Compared with the non-ARB arm, fewer individuals in the valsartan arm reached the primary endpoint.
The reduction in the composite primary endpoint was largely due to a 45% reduction observed in the risk of stroke and a 49% reduction in the risk of angina.1

What does this mean for South Asians?

General changes in lifestyle throughout East Asia in recent years has resulted in the Japanese risk profile becoming more similar to that of other populations. “KYOTO HEART enrolled patients with high rates of metabolic syndrome and obesity, and numerous smokers,” said Dr. Sohal. “For this reason, the results of this study may not only be relevant to patients with high blood pressure in Japan, but also other populations like South Asians where such risk factors are highly prevalent.”

The study was prematurely stopped after a median observation time of 3.27 years. This was for ethical reasons because of unequivocal benefit in the Diovan* (valsartan) group.

Approved in Canada in 1997, Diovan* (valsartan) is a selective ARB, and is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate essential hypertension. Diovan* may be administered alone, or in combination with thiazide diuretics or as a fixed dose combination called Diovan*-HCT. Diovan* is also approved to reduce cardiovascular mortality in clinically stable patients with signs and symptoms of left ventricular dysfunction in conjunction with acute myocardial infarction when the use of an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) is not appropriate. Diovan* is also approved for use in patients with chronic heart failure who have been shown to be intolerant to an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor. There is no evidence that Diovan* provides added benefits when it is used with ACE inhibitors. Diovan* is not approved to reduce the risk of stroke or angina pectoris.

BVN robotics team wins regional competition

The Blue Valley North Metal Mustang Robotics team recently won the regional FIRST robotics competition. Fifty-six teams from Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Missouri competed in Oklahoma City. Blue Valley North now advances to the National FIRST competition to be held in Atlanta on April 15-17. FIRST is an international organization whose mission is to inspire young people to become science and technology leaders.

The Science Olympiad team at California Trail Junior High School has retained its state title and will be returning to the National Science Olympiad.
The national competition is May 22 at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign. In the 2009 national competition, California Trail finished 38th.
The Kansas Science Olympiad was April 2 at Wichita State University where 30 high school and 30 middle school and junior high teams competed. The top two teams in each division advanced to the national competition.
In addition to California Trail’s first-place finish, Oregon Trail Junior High was third and Frontier Trail Junior High was ninth.
Among high schools, Olathe East was fourth and Olathe North was seventh.

Who was behind Hyderabad riots? Many rumours, no answer

Were the communal riots in Hyderabad pre-planned and if so who was responsible for it? These questions have cropped up in people's minds as wild allegations are being made by a section of leaders within the ruling Congress party.

While party leaders from Telangana have pointed fingers at their colleagues from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, saying it was a conspiracy to weaken the movement for separate statehood, a Congress MP from Andhra has blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Congress MP from Vijayawada L. Rajagopal, who met his party's central leaders in Delhi Tuesday, alleged that riots in Hyderabad were the handiwork of the BJP to prove its existence. He pointed out that riots broke out soon after young BJP legislator Kishan Reddy took over as president of the party's state unit.

Chief Minister K. Rosaiah is already facing embarrassment as the opposition is mounting pressure on him to order a probe into the allegations of a couple of Telangana MPs of his own party that the riots were a conspiracy by leaders from Andhra and Rayalaseema to destabilise his government and weaken the Telangana movement.

Taking strong note of the developments following protests by Congress leaders from Andhra and Telangana, the central leadership of the Congress party has asked two MPs and a legislator not to go public with their allegations.

In the past, squabbling within the Congress party was blamed for riots in the old city of Hyderabad. Rivals of late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy within the Congress had alleged that he was behind the 1990 riots, which claimed over 200 lives. Reddy, however, denied the allegations.

Home Minister P. Sabita Indra Reddy said investigations were on to identify the culprits and assured that they would be dealt with firmly. 'Special teams have been constituted to probe the violence and identify the guilty. While some rioters have already been arrested, there are others who are yet to be arrested,' she said.

The home minister evaded a reply to queries about some media reports which quoted intelligence sources as saying that a BJP minister in Karnataka was behind the communal violence. The reports said the minister developed a grouse against the Rosaiah government for taking action against his illegal mining operations in Anantapur district bordering Karnataka.

The reports also quoted intelligence sleuths as saying that the minister funded several right-wing outfits in Hyderabad to create trouble. The state leadership of the Congress party has reportedly brought this to the notice of party president Sonia Gandhi.

Demise of scooter emblematic of India’s rise

Bajaj to stop making vehicle that was symbol of arrival in the middle classIt was a purchase to be remembered.

There was the years-long waiting list to buy it and the jealous stares once you finally got it home. There was the pride of that first ride when, weaving through the streets, you knew that you'd finally — finally! — made it to the middle class.

Outwardly it was just a scooter, a spluttering two-stroke Indian-made Bajaj with three gears. All too often, it came painted a sickly avocado-green.

But in a time of empty shops and a hobbled economy, it was success.

"This was something big," said Yash Tekwani, a well-to-do New Delhi businessman who can still picture the day in the early 1970s when his father, who ran a tobacco shop, drove home a blue Bajaj. In a working-class neighborhood where most people had only bicycles, the neighbors turned out to gawk. "It was a joyous occasion."

The joy, though, is ending.

Later this month, Bajaj's last scooter factory will roll out its last scooter, ending an era in India's transition from dreary socialist behemoth into a consumerist powerhouse. And those one-time icons of middle-class achievement will be left to secondhand dealers and armies of sidewalk mechanics.

Because in modern India, modest dependability just isn't enough.

"People have more money to spend today," said Pradeep Tyagi. He sells used motorcycles in the New Delhi neighborhood of Karol Bagh, where dozens of used-car and motorcycle dealers — and a handful of scooter shops — are jammed into a few narrow lanes. "No one wants to spend that money on a scooter."

Wander among the neighborhood's tiny, dusty shops and it becomes clear how India's aspirations have changed.

Because while India still has desperate poverty — more than one-third of the population lives on less than $1 per day — it has also become a nation of fierce consumers, its buying habits nurtured by a growing economy, easier loans and relentless advertising. In places like Karol Bagh, that means people who once would have aspired to scooters now want motorcycles. And everyone dreams of cars.

Just ask Maug Lal. On a recent morning, the 32-year-old garbage collector was outside a Karol Bagh shop, staring longingly at a Honda motorcycle. The bike was red, streaked with racing decals and only slightly used.

He had come to look at scooters. Instead, he found himself among the motorcycles. He couldn't afford one — a low-end used model costs $350; a decent used scooter costs less than half that — but he mumbled that eventually he would be able to save up the money. It would only take four years.

Lal kept his fingers resting on the Honda as a friend spoke up for him. "The motorcycle is a real man's vehicle," said Mohammed Tajuddin Khan. "When you sit on it you look strong."

It wasn't always like this.

Thirty years ago, India's economy was mired in central planning and government regulations, back when foreign companies were largely frozen out of the Indian market and only a handful of people could afford anything more than a bicycle.

Enter the Bajaj family, owners of a business empire with roots in cotton, steel mills and the beginnings of the scooter business.

Bajaj brought mobility to the Indian masses, making a clunky, affordable machine that, with a little squeezing, could carry an entire family. That image — dad driving with one child standing between his knees, while mom rides behind him holding the baby — became emblematic of India's slow move into modernity.

It seemed like a miracle. And one where only the driver had to wear a helmet.

At one point, the best-selling Bajaj model, the Chetak, was selling 100,000 units per month. The waiting list could last a decade and desperate buyers would pay huge premiums above the list price to get one. For a time, Bajaj was the world's largest scooter manufacturer.

Its 1980s sales campaign, an ode to patriotism and nascent consumerism, became iconic on its own, with TV ads showing young boys clutching Indian flags and happy families gathering around scooters.

"The Bajaj is ours," the jingle said, ignoring the fact that the design was largely borrowed from the Italian Vespa.

So when Bajaj announced late last year it was discontinuing its scooter business to concentrate on motorcycles, the news set off a wave of hand-wringing: Indian newspaper editorials bemoaned the changing times; Old Bajaj scooter ads became TV and Internet sensations.

"Exit an icon," the Statesman newspaper declared. "Salute the scooter."

Bajaj, though, wasn't thinking about icons when it made its decision. Scooter sales have plummeted in this decade as motorcycle sales have boomed. Bajaj stopped most scooter production four years ago.

"We too feel nostalgic about how dear Bajaj scooters have been to the Indian middle class," Milind Bade, a top Bajaj official told reporters. "But the business has to move on."

In many ways, Bajaj was simply moving with the Indian economy, which has blossomed since it was opened to outside investment in the late 1980s.

By conservative estimates, the Indian middle class is now thought to number about 50 million people, more than five times as many as the early 1970s. More generous estimates put the middle class as high as 250 million — roughly a quarter of the population.

They are desperate to buy. The avalanche of advertising — for TVs, apartment complexes, cars, cell phones, sex therapists, silk suits and saris — can make this country look like another America, a place where buying is a sport and a pastime.

Along the way, Bajaj has also changed. First it modernized its scooters for increasingly finicky buyers, and then shifted decisively to motorcycles. Its last scooter, the Kristal, sells for about $750 — compared to nearly $2,000 for its best-selling Pulsar motorcycle.

Despite the price difference, motorcycle sales reached almost 220,000 in December, an 86 percent increase compared to the same month one year earlier. Only a few hundred scooters were sold.

And cars? They are now the new middle-class aspiration. Car sales reached almost 154,000 in February — the highest-selling month ever, and 33 percent more than one year earlier. Last year the Indian-made Tata Nano went on sale at around $2,400, making headlines with its claim to be the world's cheapest car. While not yet in full production and fairly uncommon on Indian roads, analysts expect the Nano to soon become ubiquitous.

If this can make India seem like a place where those clunky Bajaj scooters will soon be forgotten, Neeraj Marwah will make sure that won't happen.

He is an often-scowling man with a scraggly three-day beard whose family has been selling used scooters for two generations. He works out of a concrete store the size of a garage, sitting behind a desk that looks ready to collapse.

Young people prefer motorcycles these days, he admits, but there are still millions of Indians out there yearning for their first Bajaj scooter. The are cheap, dependable and easy to repair. Marwah says he'll be fixing them up and selling them for decades.

"Every day I sell at least one of these things," he said, shrugging. "Bajaj can shut down, but I'll still be selling them. People will always want them, and I'll always have some to sell."

The increase in listings are coming right at the time when first-time home buyers are really getting busy and serious about buying before the April 30 tax credit deadline. There are many new listings in all price ranges and styles of homes!

In Leawood there were 41 new listings in February and 39 through March 14. The 80 new listings ranged in
price from $147,500 - $1,429,000; the average list price of all homes is over $500,000 with homes in Hallbrook ranging from $700k to $3.5 mil. Prices for homes in Leawood are on average much higher than other suburbs in the area. In addition, most of the homes are older with some going back to 1925.

total number of listings and price ranges for those subdivisions.

‘Appreciation more valuable than an award'

Manda Sudharani's flair for the Pallavi is not news anymore. Her concerts are a matter of easy elegance – in reality, a weave of knowledge, craft and vidwat. The Music Academy's Pallavi Prize was hers in 1984 and Sri Krishna Gana Sabha also accorded early recognition to her, in this domain. A Top-A Grade artist of AIR, Hyderabad, she shares her experience here…

Her guru and other formative forces…
Initially, I learnt from K. Rangachari and then came under the tutelage of Ivaturi Vijayeswara Rao. He is one who consciously spends every moment of his life thinking only about music. He did not confine himself to playing the role of an accompanying violinist but went on to learn about 400 kritis, done without the assistance of books or relying on notation as a means to learning. His greatness took another dimension when he taught anyone who approached him. It is not merely the songs that he taught, but also lessons on how to put together a concert. His students spread across generations. (He is now teaching my daughter, Sruthi Ravali).

Also, my father's desire that I pursue music professionally and the support of my husband were positive contributions in shaping my musical career.

Your Pallavis and the effortless flow of swaras in such ragas as Gowdamalhar, Vardhini or Malavi…
I cannot think of any perceptible reason. My guru must have spotted the talent in me and steered me in that direction. It all depends on one's personality and I was ready to accept challenges.

As the saying goes ‘Mukhe Mukhe Saraswathi', it means each person presents his own aesthetic version and no one should be discarded or cast aside. I have had the chance to listen to many greats -- Ariyakkudi, Mani Iyer, GNB, Balamuralikrishna, KVN, Nedunuri and Voleti --- and that may have influenced me a lot in my presentations.

First performance in Chennai…
I envy the people of Chennai. Many musicians from Andhra Pradesh -- Balamuralikrishna, Chittibabu and Mandolin Shrinivas, to name a few -- have made the city their home. I too used to visit often - initially to listen and then to perform. My first concert in Chennai was under the auspices of Madras Telugu Academy. T.V.K. Sastry was instrumental in organising the programme. Subsequently, I performed at other sabhas including The Music Academy, Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha, Nadopasana and KGS. What is important to a performer is the nod of appreciation, that spontaneous ‘sabash', which stays in the mind and is more valuable than an award or a certificate. That appreciation, I've had in plenty from the Chennai audience.

On concert planning…
The idea should be to have the songs of the Trinity as a base. Ideally, a concert must include rakti ragas such as Yadukula Khambhodi, Khambodi or Sankarabharanam and a vakra raga. Provision should also be made for gamaka-oriented ragas (and songs) and Podi songs (in Kuntalavarali or Garudadhwani).

When it comes to pallavis, all the kritis I have sung have been my own. In fact, I adapted the pallavi of D.K. Jayaraman (‘Maa Mayura Meedhile Nee Vaa', Bilahari) and translated the lyric to Telugu. It became a great hit.

Today's budding performers need…
They should give up the desire to appear on television. Classical music calls for creativity which can be developed by listening, appreciating and thus getting into the process of preparing oneself completely.

The motto must be - learn and learn more. Also, ‘cassette-copying' will not help one achieve anything in the long run. If the performances of the masters are outstanding even today, it is because of the painstaking and strenuous journey they undertook over several years to perfect their art.

A word of caution. Over-exposure of youngsters will only have an adverse effect. Society is in need not merely of doctors or engineers but artists to preserve our culture and heritage. This responsibility rests with today's youth.

It's very rare that seventh graders get selected for this, even more for a "desi" kid! - his music teacher mentioned that he will be surrounded by eighth and even some 9th graders from the high school choir. The KMEA association trains the students all day Friday Feb 26th and then they gave a concert performance on the same day at 5:00.

New Credit Card Rules

The Federal Reserve has come up with new credit card rules to help protect consumers.

There are several changes, but a few include requiring the credit card companies to:

Send you a notice 45 days before increasing rates or other fees.
Keep your interest rate the same for the first 12 months of opening an account.
Let you know how long it will take you to pay off your balance if you make minimum payments.
Provide protections for underage consumers.

New generation of men in India shaving off mustaches

KOCHI, INDIA -- Cheered on by his female friends, Nanda Kumar, 26, staged a small but significant rebellion before he left his family in this Indian seaport recently for a high-tech job in Hyderabad: He shaved off his mustache.

For generations of Indian men, a mustache was a must -- especially here in southern India, where fabulous facial hair has long symbolized masculinity. Among younger urban Indians, however, it's the cleanshaven men whom women prefer to kiss, date or just hang out with, according to a recent AC Nielsen survey conducted in eight major cities.

"Our fathers thought they were not men without their mustaches. But 'hairy Hindustan' is over," said Kumar, using a time-honored nickname for the subcontinent. "It's old India. The mustache is for my father, not for me."

The number of women rejecting facial hair appeared to surprise many Indian cultural commentators, but they were ready with explanations. Some considered the disappearing mustache an indicator of youthful city-dwelling Indians' growing globalization. Others thought it was significant that the findings took women's opinions into account.

The survey found that 72 percent of the women who responded in Mumbai and 83 percent of those surveyed in the southern city of Chennai said they were more likely to want to kiss a cleanshaven man. The numbers were similar in New Delhi, India's capital, and in the eastern city of Kolkata, often seen as a center of tradition.

In "Hair India: A Guide to the Bizarre Beards and Magnificent Moustaches of Hindustan," Richard McCallum and photographer Chris Stowers chronicle their travels among the camel-herding tribes of Rajasthan in the north and the backwaters of Kerala in the south to find India's "facial foliage" before it becomes a part of history.

"The mustache represents all the aspects of old India -- the corruption, the baddie cop in an old film, the government job for life -- that the young generation want to leave behind," said McCallum, a pogonologist, or student of facial hair. "Besides, no one wants to look like their parents."

Still, he said, the big mustache may live on in India as a tourist attraction.

Indian barbershops have all sorts of names for the various 'stache styles, which they depict humorously on signboards. There is the "Handlebar," a classic twirlable curlable and a professional requirement for the doormen of five-star Indian hotels. There is the "Walrus," a large, droopy mustache that hangs over the lips. There is also the "Pencil Line" and the "Strap-On," or false follicles -- dyed black or stained pumpkin orange, oiled, conditioned and combed.

But ideals are changing. Some of India's cricketers, who command huge followings, no longer have facial hair, while many Bollywood stars sport the signature look of the global sex symbol: stubble.

Indian women's magazines have printed letters to the editor saying how happy they are that the great Indian mustache may be trimmed, a sentiment that many young women here say they agree with.

"No guy I liked ever had a mustache," said Vaishnavi Viraj, 18, a student at Delhi University. "My mum, though, thinks that mustaches are a sign of royalty and represent elegance and pride. As for me, I just don't like very hairy men."
"I relate them to 'uncles' and 'dads,' " Adishree Panda,18, chimed in.

Before the 18th century, only high-caste men were allowed to wear a mustache. During Mohandas Gandhi's peaceful uprising against the British in the 1930s, he asked Indians to grow beards as an act of protest against imported shavers and blades.
Sikhs wear kesh, or uncut hair, as a matter of religious principle, although a growing number of young Sikhs have shorn their hair, worrying their elders among the religious minority of 20 million.

Ram Singh Chauman of Jaipur claims to have one of the world's longest mustaches, measuring an impressive 12 1/2 feet. He had a bit part in the 1983 James Bond film "Octopussy" and was featured on a Lonely Planet magazine cover. He now charges modeling fees.

An Indian will swear on his mustache to demonstrate his sincerity. To say someone's "mustache is drooping" is to say he is sad.

Lately, though, even older Indian women are divided. Some say a mustachioed man is a sexy symbol of traditional India. Others say his time has passed.

"Many women never liked the mustache. It's too scratchy," said Pauline Hugh, 56, a hairdresser in a top Delhi salon. "In my day, Indian men equated the mustache with being responsible, respected, a real man. Meanwhile, the women suffered."

One of Hugh's co-workers, Rishi Kumar Neopani, 43, trims and colors dozens of mustaches every month. He rocks a thick mustache of his own, just like his 82-year-old father, a retired Indian army officer. But recently he has noticed his younger clients asking for a straight-razor shave, and his 23-year-old son balks at facial hair.

"I sometimes want to cut my mustache, but I can't until my father dies," Neopani said. "He would be very hurt if I shaved. The mustache is our Indian culture. Things are changing, but we can't deny what makes us Indian."

Sister of 2009 national champ wins Olathe Spelling Bee

Spelling excellence runs in the Shivashankar family.

Vanya Shivashankar won the 2010 Olathe Spelling Bee today and will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

The third-grader from Regency Place Elementary School is the younger sister of Kavya Shivashankar, who won the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

“It’s cool. I wanted to win this,” Vanya said.

She competed against 43 spellers, who had qualified by winning their local school bees. Vanya, 8, won in the 36 round of the bee, which was in the auditorium of Frontier Trail Junior High School. She correctly spelled 'arrondissement' that runner-up Ashwanth Samuel misspelled and then correctly spelled 'apparatchik' for the victory.

This is the second year in a row that Ashwanth, a seventh-grader a Prairie Trail Junior High School, had finished in second place. Last year, he went out in the 16th round and Kavya won the Olathe Bee.

The 2008 runner-up, Erica Chang, a seventh-grader at Frontier Trail Junior High School, participated in this year’s bee after missing the bee in 2009. She took third place, going out in the 17th round.

By being aware of your cyber-surroundings and who you are talking to, you should be able to safely enjoy social networking online. It will take many phone conversations to get to know someone, but you really won't be able to make a clear judgment until you can meet each other in person. Just use common sense and listen to your inner voice; it will tell you when something doesn't feel right about the online conversations taking place.

Once you are well informed and comfortable with your findings, you can begin your search from hundreds of networking communities to join. This can easily be done by performing a standard internet search. Your search will likely return a number of results, including MySpace, FriendWise, FriendFinder, Yahoo! 360, Facebook, Orkut, and Classmates.

Issues on Social Networking Sites

Privacy
On large social networking services, there have been growing concerns about users giving out too much personal information and the threat of sexual predators. Users of these services need to be aware of data theft or viruses. However, large services, such as MySpace and Netlog, often work with law enforcement to try to prevent such incidents.

In addition, there is a perceived privacy threat in relation to placing too much personal information in the hands of large corporations or governmental bodies, allowing a profile to be produced on an individual's behavior on which decisions, detrimental to an individual, may be taken.

Access to information
Many social networking services, such as Facebook, provide the user with a choice of who can view their profile. This prevents unauthorized user(s) from accessing their information. Parents have become a big problem to teens who want to avoid their parents to access their MySpace or Facebook accounts. By choosing to make their profile private, teens are able to select who can see their page and this prevents unwanted parents from lurking. This will also mean that only people who are added as "friends" will be able to view the profile.

Risk for child safety
Citizens and governments have been concerned by a misuse by child and teenagers of social network services, particularly in relation to online sexual predators. A certain number of actions have been engaged by governments to better understand the problem and find some solutions. A 2008 panel concluded that technological fixes such as age verification and scans are relatively ineffective means of apprehending online predators.

Potential for misuse
The relative freedom afforded by social networking services has caused concern regarding the potential of its misuse by individual patrons. In October 2006, a fake Myspace profile created in the name of Josh Evans by Lori Janine Drew led to the suicide of Megan Meier. The event incited global concern regarding the use of social networking services for bullying purposes.

Twitter to Compete With Ever-Expanding Facebook Connect

Facebook's Connect system, the unseen code that makes logging into many other Web sites much easier, marches on--it's just reached MySpace for example. But Twitter isn't planning on being left out, and it's improving its own version.

Facebook Connect has come so very far since its mid-2008 launch, and it's been so very successful it's basically stamped out competing services from Google. And now there's news that it's hitting MySpace--which is an even more potent demonstration of Connect's power, since MySpace was a vicious Facebook rival in the early days, and it actually had its own competing service just two years ago. The new effort is all part of MySpace's desperate scramble to resurrect itself from a ruined social network into a social media-sharing service, and though it brings all the traditional advantages of Connect (easy log in, widgets) it's sure to be a slightly bitter pill for MySpace's management. For now Connect is mainly tied to the Fan Video system inside MySpace--where it lets you share music videos with your friends--but it wouldn't be surprising to see it more fully integrated into MySpace soon.

Meanwhile Twitter, Facebook's newest rival on the social network scene, is apparently determined to get into the same sort of cross-Web site login business that Connect operates in. Various code hooks and libraries to make it all possible are already embedded in Twitter's API, but over at TechCrunch they've heard from insiders that Twitter wants to wrap it all up in a much more user-friendly package. The idea is that if Twitter makes it super-easy for Web site managers to add in Twitter logins and sophisticated status-updating connects back to Twitter to their sites, the system will get used more. Which will drive more users and traffic to Twitter, of course...and that'll push up its importance in the real-time status update market (where Twitter may have just turned its first profits.)

One advantage of Twitter's system is that it is an open format, compared to Facebook's proprietary Connect code, and that may prove attractive to some. But exactly how well Twitter will fare with its efforts is impossible to predict. What is clear though is that where social networking was once seen as a strange time wasting bit of online fun, the systems that make it possible are carefully insinuating their way deeper into the workings of the Web--and they're actually delivering additional, useful services as a result.

LinkedIn is a networking site for professionals. It can be used quite effectively to find work and is also great for recruiting. They recently upgraded some aspects of their site to cater specifically to recruiters as well. You can find work there as well as find someone to do work for you. LinkedIn currently has around 40-45 million users and growing and that certainly provides a lot of opportunity for anyone looking to find a job through this platform.

However it is a bit different then Facebook or Twitter in that it requires a bit more etiquette to use properly. It is a platform that many use to showcase their skills and grow their professional network as opposed to their personal network.

While the other two are about networking, LinkedIn is about networking professionally. You won't get away with adding people randomly. You have to pick the right people and when you do send an invitation give them a good reason to accept your invitation. Adding someone just to add them just isn't going to fly here. With that said, LinkedIn is great for networking with highly professional people. You can make some great connections on this platform. In a way, not being able to add everyone makes it that much more dynamic, you will end up with better quality people.

But if you walk into LinkedIn thinking you can add anyone and everyone you will soon find out that's a big mistake. You will probably end up being blocked if you start adding people without considering first whether or not they fit into your circle of network.

It's a bit restrictive in a sense, but in the end it makes for high quality connections.

Twitter

Remember those crazy days of e-mail when you couldn't send messages between systems? Microsoft Mail customers could only send mail within their enterprise or to other customers of Microsoft Mail (ditto for the other systems). It wasn't until SMTP standardized things that e-mail could move between systems.

E-mail was interesting then, but it didn't really become dominant until it standardized around the SMTP messaging protocol. Are we experiencing the same thing with Twitter? No Twitter is an island, entire of itself...

(Credit: Twitter) Twitter has become hugely popular, but it remains a closed communication medium. Yes, it has opened its data stream and maintains an open API approach to its development, but Twitter is still a silo.

Yes, it's a big (and growing) silo, but then, so were AOL and Compuserve in their day.

There is a better way, and it's arguably the direction the industry is going to need to take for microblogging services like Twitter to become as big as e-mail. We need to standardize. We need an SMTP-like standard for microblogging.

And, frankly, we need an open-source implementation. Open-source Sendmail was arguably the first messaging system to embrace SMTP. Sendmail gave would-be e-mail adopters a free (as in cost and freedom) e-mail system to explore, which led to Sendmail becoming the world's most popular message transfer agent.

Microblogging could use the same, and StatusNet's open-source micro-blogging software could well play that role. StatusNet is the company behind Identi.ca, the microblogging platform favored by the free and open-source crowd.

In terms of public blogging, Identi.ca is still more a curiosity than a real contender with Twitter. But, as in e-mail, it's probably not wise to underestimate the value of an open-source approach to standardizing microblogging intercommunications, particularly as microblogging enters the enterprise.

For example, enterprises that want to move beyond Twitter's one-size-fits-all approach to microblogging might prefer Yammer's microblogging-behind-the-firewall approach, an approach that StatusNet also offers. But StatusNet takes it further by enabling enterprises to set up a micro-blogging service that customers, employees, and partners could collaborate on. A private-public microblogging network, as it were, and completely based on open source and standards.

AOL once sat atop the consumer e-mail world, even as Twitter dominates microblogging today. Eventually, standards won out in e-mail. I expect we'll see much the same thing in microblogging. The question is, how long will it take?

Facebook

Facebook was founded by 2004 by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg and originally called thefacebook. It was quickly successful on campus and expanded beyond Harvard into other Ivy League schools. With the phenomenon growing in popularity, Zuckerberg enlisted two other students, Duston Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, to assist. Within months, thefacebook became a nationwide college networking website.

Zuckerberg and Moskovitz left Harvard to run thefacebook full time shortly after taking the site national. In August of 2005, thefacebook was renamed Facebook, and the domain was purchased for a reported $200,000 US Dollars (USD). At that time, it was only available to schools, universities, organizations, and companies within English speaking countries, but has since expanded to include anyone.

Facebook users create a profile page that shows their friends and networks information about themselves. The choice to include a profile in a network means that everyone within that network can view the profile. The profile typically includes the following: Information, Status, Friends, Friends in Other Networks, Photos, Notes, Groups, and The Wall.

Users are able to search for friends and acquaintances by e-mail address, school, university, or just by typing in a name or location for search. When people become friends, they are able to see all of each others' profiles including contact information. E-mail notifications let users know when new friends have chosen to add them to their list or when someone has sent a message to them within the system.

A popular feature on Facebook is the ability to share photographs uploaded from a phone, camera, or hard drive. As with other private information, users have the option to allow only friends to see their pictures or anyone. There is an unlimited amount of storage available, which is a major advantage of Facebook's photograph sharing capabilities.

Groups can be created by users. These can include anything from grade school connections to hobbies and interests. Groups can be public and available to everyone or private, meaning only those invited can join and view discussions. Similarly, the Events feature allows friends to organize parties, concerts, and other get togethers in the real world. Users can also become fans of everything such as people, organizations, television shows, movies, and musicians.

There are countless applications available to add to a profile. They range from a list of Top Friends to movie compatibility with others, and maps of where users have traveled. These applications are created by individuals outside of Facebook's employment who are known as Developers.

Users of Facebook can share news stories, video, and other files with friends. Most news and video websites have buttons that can be clicked to automatically share the story or video on a feed. The person sharing can make comments about the shared item that their friends will see.

Personal notes can also be written and shared with friends. When sharing an item, users can attach the item to their Wall for all to see, or can tag individual people that they think would be most interested in seeing the item. When a user is tagged, they receive an e-mail notification.

Facebook had a redesign in late 2008, intended to streamline the website and make it easier to see what friends were doing. It has seen outstanding growth since its inception and is poised to maintain its dominance in social networking. In early 2009, Facebook users worldwide were nearly double that of its older competitor MySpace.

IAKC Celebrates India's 61st Republic Day

India Association of Kansas City (IAKC) celebrated its 61st Republic Day event on Sunday the 24th, with a lot of enthusiasm and fanfare. The event started with the hoisting of the Tricolor flag of India. It was followed by melodious renditions of Indian and American National Anthems by the students of the Hindi Class (conducted by Hindu Temple and Cultural Center). Students from Hindi Class also performed a variety of songs and dance sequences that won the hearts and minds of the audience.

This year, participation from Regional Associations added variety and spice to the event. Poem in Telugu with its translation in English touched everyone. Songs by Maharashtra Mandal captivated the audience and the Odissi dance was a rare classical treat. Poem on Bhagat Singh reminded everyone of the great sacrifices of the freedom fighters. Kudos to all the participants!

The stage decoration was immaculate and provided a stunning backdrop to the event. The event was followed with sumptuous lunch cooked and served by the Executive Committee members and their spouses.

As the event was celebrated with fervor and gaiety, IAKC was mindful of the victims of the Haiti's earthquake. IAKC collected $850 from Indian community during the hour-and-a-half long event for Haiti cause. With IAKC matching the first $300, total donation to the Haiti cause was $1,150. There was also a collection of water bottles, hygiene products and medical supplies. Once again IAKC rose to the occasion and lived up to its reputation of being a compassionate and supportive community.

Following is the text of President Pratibha Patil's speech to the nation on the eve of the 61st Republic Day.

My fellow citizens,

On the eve of our 61st Republic Day, I extend my warmest greetings to all of you across the country and also to those living abroad. To the members of our Armed Forces and Paramilitary forces who guard our frontiers and to our internal security forces, I extend my special greetings.

26th January, this year marks the completion of six decades of working, striving and, all along, being guided by the principles and objectives of the Constitution that was framed after careful deliberations and adopted in 1950. I often recall the speech of Mahatma Gandhi at the launch of the Quit India Movement on 8th August, 1942, where he said that power, when it comes, will belong to the people of India. The wish of the Father of the Nation found expression in the very opening words of the Constitution - We, the people of India.

This was a strong affirmation that the impulses of the nation and its future would be guided by its people. They would reflect their aspirations and choices, through democratic means. They would also enjoy the fundamental rights that guarantee their freedoms and dignity. Today, is a reminder that upholding the values, determining the direction and propelling the growth of our nation is a task that must be fulfilled by every citizen of the country.

In the first decade of the 21st century, India witnessed transformational changes. It also emerged as a force driving change in the world. Our achievements and experiences have, indeed, brought the nation to a definitional stage, where the promise of a bright future as a developed and progressive nation is for us to claim, as we all work together with conviction and commitment. However, as we overcome deficiencies and convert our strengths into an energetic force, we must remain deeply conscious of what we must preserve and what we must change.

Foremost amongst what we must continue with, is our democratic principles and way of life. We have ably demonstrated that we are a functioning democracy, by time and again, choosing our governments through the ballot and by taking democracy to the grassroots. Also, as we are aware, democracy is very much more demanding. It is the rule of law. It is the rule of reason.

And, as India has shown to the world, it is the rule of non-violence. Democracy involves a pattern of behaviour, in which every individual must act responsibly, show respect towards dissimilar opinions and address differences in a constructive and accommodative manner. This will build harmony and tolerance - values which are intrinsic to our philosophy; these form the bedrock of a society that embraces the diversity of language, religion and culture to create a composite whole. These values must be followed uninterruptedly in a nation that is, as vast and as varied as ours.

Secularism, our constitutionally chosen path, entails respect for all religions. Its place in our national life is unalterable. India is a land where followers of different religions have lived together for centuries. We must maintain social cohesion. Our tradition of living in accord with each other must continue to form an integral part of the rhythm of life of our future generations.

Belonging to a civilization that has deep reverence towards nature, we must also be sensitive inhabitants of the Planet, in which climate change has become a major challenge. We must judiciously use its resources, work to conserve its rich flora and fauna as well as adopt environment friendly approaches. Use of energy efficient technologies and renewable sources of energy, are some steps that can reduce the carbon footprint.

Our nation has made significant strides. We are the fourth largest economy of the world in terms of purchasing power parity. Our target of achieving a double digit growth rate is plausible and realistic, given our impressive performance during the last decade and our resilience during the global economic downturn. We should continue with policies that promote growth, and also take growth patterns to the bottom of the pyramid and, to those currently outside its purview.

Empowering the poor and the disadvantaged, enabling them to move up the economic ladder, to join the ranks of the prosperous, is a task that must be accomplished by all of us. Women need to be made full and equal partners. The inclusive growth strategy, which we have chosen, can make our growth process equitable and sustainable.

The roadmap to inclusive growth requires social justice that can be delivered through an effective social sector infrastructure. It should make quality education and good health facilities available to all citizens, along with social services and job opportunities. This, in turn, will create a human resource base which has the skills, knowledge and capacity to work productively.

Hence, our attention must remain focused on this, especially as we have a young population. They must be nurtured and prepared for taking up their responsibilities. Future growth in all sectors will depend on knowledge workers and skilled workforces. They can make our economy dynamic, our service sector efficient and competitive, our manufacturing industries broad based and our agriculture and allied sectors strong.

Furthermore, integrating and developing linkages between sectors, say agriculture and industry, will further reinforce growth. These linkages can be fortified by having connectivity at various levels. For a nation which is the seventh largest in geographical terms and the second largest in terms of population, our existing physical infrastructure is inadequate. This constrains and limits connectivity. We have to change this situation. The number of bridges, roads, harbours as well as our power generation capacity and transport facilities, among others, require extensive additions.

But, do not forget that along with these structures of cement, steel and mortar, it is also important to bridge our differences, build roads to connect hearts and minds, harbour compassion, generate goodwill towards all and transport these feelings to strengthen the unity of the nation.

We will also have to create an atmosphere for our citizens to exercise their rights and tell them to perform their duties as well. This is important to make the development of a democratic nation of over one billion people, participatory and sustainable. In the next decade, not only must we witness the speedy building up of infrastructure, but also a greater cohesiveness among citizens.

A bottleneck and an impediment in bringing about the desired results, for which policies and schemes have been formulated and huge allocation of funds made, is weak implementation and corruption in the system. The causes of the chronic ailment of tardy implementation have to be treated. There should be accountability for lack of implementation of projects, programmes and schemes. This is critical for bringing about positive change.

Public-Private Partnerships and SHGs, that is Self-Help Groups, are important mechanisms for outcome-oriented action and for creating a wide network of stakeholders for growth. There have been numerous examples of how women in urban and rural areas have been able to become financially self-reliant through the SHG route. A movement towards universalisation of SHGs, that brings within its ambit all eligible women, can be a powerful instrument for the economic empowerment of women and for inclusive growth. Facilitation of their formation and functioning will, thus, create a wave of progress and change.

The world over, as also in our country, there is a rising demand for food-grains. This foretells the need for an intense focus on increasing agriculture productivity to ensure food availability, particularly of agricultural produces which are in short supply, to avoid spiraling food prices. To achieve this very important objective, I call for urgent steps towards a Second Green Revolution.

There should be use of new technologies, better seeds, improved farming practices, effective water management techniques, as well as more intense frameworks for connecting the farmer with the scientific community, with lending institutions and with markets. Our farmers are ready and willing to work, earn and learn. We have to respond positively and do some 'out of the box thinking'. Higher agriculture incomes will improve the living standards of the over 145 million rural households, in the over six lakh villages of the country. With higher income levels, the rural economy will generate demand and provide impetus for growth in other sectors.

Recognizing this reality, we have to involve the agriculture economy more pro-actively into the growth process, both as a centre of production and as a generator of demand for various products and services. There are many complementarities that exist between farming communities and the corporate world because both are private enterprises. The possibilities of win-win partnerships between industry and agriculture should be explored. For example, the food processing industry when located close to agricultural areas can transform India's rural landscape.

Currently, food processing in India is as low as 10 percent of production, as compared to 65 percent to 80 percent, generally seen in the developed countries. Other agro-based industries would be equally important as propellers of growth. The question is how to attract farmers into such partnerships, which do not adversely affect, but rather keep the interests of farmers in the forefront and take into account their various sensitivities, particularly about their land-holdings.

This needs to be done in a farmer-friendly manner and by creating awareness in the farming community. Some Indian companies have understood that linking farmers to industrial units would be beneficial to both. They have developed interesting models of engagement with the farming community. We should study these experiences, as we look at viable options that suit Indian conditions for harnessing the potential of village economies.

Today, the optimum use of capital or labour or resources across the entire spectrum of our national activity is dependent on cutting-edge technologies and technological breakthroughs. We need technologies for more efficient and cleaner energy, for our industry and agriculture. India has to chalk out strategies that will promote research and development resulting in innovative methods and techniques.

The quality of research in our country must be upgraded to build knowledge structures. I think the nation should take this up as an urgent calling. A knowledge economy requires an education system that encourages creativity and a capacity to think in a novel fashion. Also, our research institutions should join global knowledge networks to keep themselves abreast of worldwide advancements in research. Technology should reach a broader section of our society, and also the movement of grassroots innovations should receive encouragement.

A change which is required, and of which I have spoken often is the eradication of social malpractices in particular those related to discrimination against women. These pose a hindrance on our path to building a more progressive and equitable nation. We should follow a positive agenda for the empowerment of women. A change in our mindsets will be important to remove prejudices and create equal opportunities for all citizens. This is essential for our inclusive growth agenda and for tapping the full potential of our population.

In any mission, particularly one as complex and challenging as nation building, as has been said by our first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, 'We have to labour, and to work, and to work hard, to give reality to our dreams.' For this, motivational levels have to be kept high.

Media can have an important influence on how people see the country. With relentless advances in technology, media is now an integral part of our daily lives. It can create awareness by bringing information to the people, getting them to reflect, and making them realize their responsibilities towards the nation. With a media that plays a constructive role, people would be inspired to take actions that would contribute to building the nation and also to learn about the benefits of positive actions.

For growth, an environment of security is essential. Government is committed to maintain high vigil and take appropriate measures to address internal security challenges. Our country has been a target of terrorism for more than two decades. Government has taken and will continue to take necessary steps to tackle threats emanating from terrorism. It will also continue to work with the international community to combat this menace.

As in the past, in the future also, the voice of India in the world would be a voice for peace, a voice for development, and a voice of hope. In the global arena, we will seek a change in the structure of multilateral institutions, so that they reflect contemporary realities. We will continue to cooperate with the international community to deal with global issues. We will seek to build friendly relations with countries in our region and those across the world.

As 2009 came to a close, there have been many analyses about what are the possible prospects of the next decade for India. Some refer to it as the deciding decade, the decade of reckoning. On reflection, I fully agree that it will be so. It must, therefore, mean a decade in which all Indians must do their work with a sense of responsibility, discipline, integrity of mind and purpose as well as with a spirit of cooperation.

We will have to inspire our young generation so that they are virtuous, with good character and a sense of fellow feeling towards others. We must channelise all our efforts towards the goal of taking the country to a higher level of all round national development and not rest till we achieve our goal. We can then be proud that we have performed our duty and borne our responsibility well. It is said that, fortune is an outcome of good work and can slip away, if we are lax in our work. I am reminded of a few inspirational lines.

With these words, I once again wish all fellow citizens peace, prosperity and progress on the occasion of our Republic Day.

"I send my warmest wishes on behalf of the American people to the people of India and to those here in America and around the world who are celebrating Republic Day. As the world’s largest democracies, the United States and India have a strong shared belief in the values of liberty, pluralism, and religious tolerance.

This Republic Day is particularly special because it marks India’s Diamond Jubilee. In the sixty years since the Indian Constitution was adopted, we have built a strong and vibrant partnership. I was pleased that Prime Minister Singh was the honored guest for the first state dinner of my Presidency. It was a chance to celebrate the great and growing partnership between our two Nations, and the friendship between our peoples. Indeed, the more than two million Indian Americans in the United States enrich every corner of our great nation – leading in government, science, industry and the arts. And as our peoples continue to build upon that friendship, let our governments continue to work together to advance peace, prosperity, and stability around the globe."

National Security Guards (NSG) snipers and mobile hit teams have been spread-out across the capital city, where security arrangement began 8:30 am to thwart out any terror attempts.

The eight-kilometer-long parade route between Vijay Chowk and Red Fort has secured with Over 15,000 security personnel and a ground-to-air security apparatus has been placed.

Briefing media about the security arrangements , Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal said on Monday, Jan 25, that 192 companies of police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed on the parade route.

He added that as part of the security vigil CCTV cameras were placed at key positions

Security in railways stations and bus terminal along with patrolling in crowded market areas have been tightened.

As part of the security measures, Metro train operation during the parade will be halted.

Indira Gandhi airport and Palam Airport have been put on high security alert.

The chief guest at the parade in 2010, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak will witness the parade along with President Pratibha Patil, Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the country's top political and military brass.

Security has been tightened for parades across the country, especially in sensitive states of northeast and Jammu Kashmir.

Blood Levels in KC low

Recent bad weather has cut blood donations and put inventories at critically low levels. The Community Blood Center of Greater Kansas City has only a half-day blood supply on its shelves. Poor road conditions last week have hampered collections at neighborhood donations centers and mobile blood drives. Also, blood centers in Florida are providing blood to earthquake victims in Haiti, and our Community Blood Center will assist in replenishing those supplies, as needed.

The Community Blood Center will be at The Church of the Resurrection on Monday and Tuesday, February 1 & 2 from 8AM to 8PM.

Veer: Movie Review

In a scene from the film, Salman Khan fractures his leg and limps almost for one full reel. But in real life, it seems like Veer Salman ne apne hi paav par kulhadi maar lee (hit the axe on his own leg). The average story he pens doesn’t do justice to the immense intensity he adds to his performance. So Salman is marred and let down by his own self.

Veer opens in 1862 though it comes close to the masala magnum opus flicks of the 80s. The story is loosely reminiscent of Manmohan Desai’s Mard (1985) while the setting and treatment are derived from same director’s Dharam Veer (1977).
As the British enslave India with their devious Divide and Rule policy, kings and nawabs fall to their guile and cunning, and entrust their precious kingdom to the foreigners.

Except for the brave Pindaris, who prefer death to dishonour and will fight to their last breath to save their land...their mother.

The bravest, the toughest, the strongest of the Pindaris is Veer (Salman Khan). As Veer takes on the might of the British Empire, he also has to fight the conniving King of Madavgarh (Jackie Shroff) as well his own jealous tribesmen.

But then the stakes are high...

At stake is his love for princess Yashodhara (Zarine Khan), daughter of his sworn enemy...

At stake is his thirst to avenge his father's (Mithun Chakravarthy) dishonour...

At stake is his very existence itself....

Cannons roar, swords clash in fierce battle, the dead pile up... And when the dust settles down on the blood soaked land...one valiant warrior stands head and shoulders above them all – Veer!

Salman Khan gives a powerful performance in real sense. He is so prominent in the film that not even his brother Sohail Khan gets one consolation scene. Mithun Chakravarthy is the only one who stands on his own other than Salman Khan. Zarine Khan is a replica of Katrina Kaif and using the same dubbing artist adds to the analogy. Lisa Lazarus is absolutely wasted in a 2 scene role. Jackie Shroff is repetitive in his villainous act.

You have to be a braveheart to watch Veer.

An Obituary

An Obituary printed in the London Times - Interesting and sadly rather true.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on.

The government has extended the First-Time Buyers Credit through contracts written on/before April 30, 2010. There is also a provision for current home owners to get a credit up to $6,500 if they write a contract before April 30 and close by June 30, 2010. Certain other qualifications must be met for both programs.

There were 221 homes available for sale in Lenexa at the end of December; the lowest number all year. Homes ranged in price from $112,000 to $1.9 mil. The number of homes for sale should begin to increase as we go through springtime. Traditionally, the number of listings increase in the first several months, peak in the summer, and then decline through the fall and winter months.

Buyers are busy writing contracts with 39 homes under contract ranging in price from $105,000 to $785,000 with 26 homes (67%) $300,000 or under. New listings are also coming onto the market, but with the cold, snowy weather, the number of listings have been a little slower. 21 new listings range in price from $114,000 to $519,900. It is expected that home buying activity will be particularly strong through the end of April as buyers take advantage of the rebate programs.

Preity Zinta highlights plight of Indian widows

Bollywood star Preity Zinta said Wednesday that misinterpretations of Hinduism -- often fuelled by greed -- were partly responsible for the dire plight of India's oppressed and neglected widows.

Speaking as she took up the role of ambassador for the Loomba Trust, a charity that campaigns for widows' rights, Zinta railed against the Indian custom that widows are forced to stop wearing coloured clothes or jewellery.

'I am a Hindu and I'd like to say I think religion is always interpreted by various different people and the greatest reason for misinterpreting religion is always greed,' Zinta told a press conference in New Delhi.

Hindu widows in India are not supposed to remarry and often fall into lives of desperate poverty after being thrown out of the family home because they are seen as a drain on scarce resources.

Zinta, glamorous star of Bollywood blockbusters such as 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' (Tomorrow May Never Come), recently completed a management course at Harvard Business School and is known as one of India's most articulate actresses.

Olathe Continues Digging Out from Storms

Olathe City crews are continuing the task of clean-up after the recent storms. Crews are using large-wheel loaders to remove large piles of snow from street corners in downtown that are impacting driving sight distances and from areas throughout the city where drifting snow has narrowed lanes.

Tomorrow, January 12th, crews will be at full staff plowing slush and melting snow from residential streets and cul-de-sacs. Residents are asked to park vehicles in driveways whenever possible during the day to help make sure plow crews can clear streets in front of their homes.

Between Christmas Eve of 2009 and January 7, 2010, about 20 inches of snow has fallen in Olathe, and City crews worked around the clock clearing the nearly 1,400 lane miles of city streets during much of that time.

Residents can help on another front as well. With schools now re-opened and the temperature warming, residents are being asked to help by clearing sidewalks in front of their houses, especially in areas where children walk to school. Elderly and disabled residents unable to shovel snow can contact the City about its volunteer "Snow Brigade", a program that matches volunteers with those needing assistance, at 971-6274.

In addition, residents are encouraged to report any problem areas in need of additional plowing or treating by calling 971-6010, or submitting a request online through the Citizen Request System on the City’s website, www.OlatheKs.org.

Popular Kannada actor Vishnuvardhan passes away

Popular Kannada actor Vishnuvardhan died of cardiac arrest in Mysore in the wee hours on Wednesday. He was 59. Vishnuvardhan, whom his fans had fondly awarded the title "sahasa simha" (a valour lion), developed breathing problems at about 0230 hours and he was immediately taken to a private hospital where he breathed his last, sources said. According to hospital sources, he died at around 0300 hrs.

His actress wife Bharathi and son-in-law Anirudh were by his side when the Kannada star died. Sources said the body of the actor, who has acted in 197 films, has been brought here.

Vishnuvardhan, a versatile actor, made his debut into the ’Sandalwood’ through "Vamsharukha", an art film directed by Janapeetha awardee Girish Karnad. He was launched into fame for his role ‘Ramachargi’, a wayward and rebellious student in "Nagarahaavu", a film directed by acclaimed director Puttanna Kanagal. Vishnuvardhan did not look back since then and went on to win seven state honours and five film fare awards.

The last film in which Vishnuvardhan acted is ‘Aaptha Rakshaka’ which is yet be released and his latest film to hit the screen is "Bellary Naaga". The death of Vishnuvardhan has come as a shock to Kannada film industry as it came a day after a well known composer and singer C Ashwath passed away.

Expressing grief over the actor’s death, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said the star would be cremated with full state honours. He also visited the actor’s residence and placed a wreath on the body. The Chief Minister, who is a film buff, described Vishnuvardhan as a towering personality of the Kannada film industry. "Vishnuvardhan, is a abhinava bhargava (born actor), Karnataka has become poor in his death", he said, urging the actor’s fans to maintain calm and peace.

Thousands of fans thronged the actor’s residence to have a glimpse of the body. Ministers Katta Subramanya Naidu, R Ashok and Suresh Kumar and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, also a film producer, paid tributes to the actor. As a mark of respect to the actor, the state government declared a holiday in schools and colleges today.

Tamil Sangam's Sangamam 2009 a Great Success!

Kansas City Tamil Sangam celebrated its year end event, Sangamam 2009, at the Blue valley west high school on 12.12.2009, from 3 pm - 9:00 pm. Kids and adults participated and made it a grand and memorable cultural event!

The six hours seemed like six fleeting minutes - such were the cultural programs, ranging from songs and dances and skits - and to make it even more noticeable, the auditorium ceilings were shaken by the loud and enthusiastic audience!

All participants also received a certificate of appreciation. Committee members who worked hard through out the year were also recognized with certificates of appreciation.

At the end of the event, for the first time in KCTS's history, delicious south indian food was served on banana leaves so adults and kids can sit and enjoy the food.

Many volunteers along with committee members helped in this huge effort and made the dinner a festive event - just like how we do back in Tamil Nadu, India. Many kids learned about how we could eat on banana leaves for the first time and
were thrilled to learn about our culture!

Home sales in the Kansas City area were very strong in November as first-time buyers rushed to close before the November 30th deadline to qualify for the government’s home buyer credit. On November 6, the tax credit was extended. First-time buyers now have through April 30 to secure a signed contract and they have through the end of June to close.

Home sales in Olathe were also very strong in November and during the past 3 months. In November, 190 homes sold compared to 82 in November, 2008 for a 132% increase. During the Sept. – Nov. period, 542 homes were sold compared to 380 last year or an increase of 43%. The average sales price in November was $229k compared to $259k last year (down 12%). This large decline does not necessarily mean homes depreciated 12%; the decline was mostly due to more lower priced homes sold this year.

Now, even Hindu brides walk down the aisle

If the idea of a wedding reception invokes the image of an overdressed couple sweating on gaudy medieval thrones with fake smiles firmly in place, we hope it’s sepia-toned. The upper-crust urban reception, which had long moved off the wobbly stage, has now evolved further—chhas has been nudged out by champagne, shehnai is getting remixed with Shakira, and saptapadi is preceded by a walk down the aisle.

Welcome to the new age fusion wedding, where Indian rituals are blended with western and Bollywood’s been partially nudged out by Hollywood.

“The big fat Hindu wedding should now be christened the big fat fusion wedding,’’ says Meghna Chitalia, owner of Party Planet, a wedding planning agency. In one such wedding that Chitalia helped organise for an “affluent and typical Gujarati family’’, an “English dinner’’ was hosted after the dandiya function.

The desi best man and maid of honour, both dressed in coordinated traditional Indian wear, made speeches and raised a toast to the couple as aunties and uncles grinned behind clusters of flowers on assigned tables. “The last few phera mantras were translated into English on the microphone by the pandit and the couple even exchanged ‘I do’s’,” says the wedding planner.

At another wedding, the bride made a grand entry into the mandap with a Yash Chopra song playing for ambience as close family members in coordinated sarees and shervanis walked her down the ‘aisle’ (the aisle walk, often, is even done to a Hollywood romantic number).

Sneha Tejwani and Dipa Sheth saw a Bolly-Holly khichdi: during a cocktail function, the couple made a bhangra entry (believe it) surrounded by traditional dancers while the sangeet had a rap sequence and wedding rings were brought in dolis to be exchanged by the couple after the pheras.

“Even concepts like pre-invitation save-the-date cards, gift registries where couples can make a wishlist and wedding websites to keep guests up to date with the wedding programme are getting more popular,’’ says wedding planner Nikhil Bhide.

Pre-wedding celebrations too have been going distinctly un-desi in the past few years. Masquerade parties, where guests are only admitted in ball gowns and tuxes, are catching on while the mehendi ceremony is now officially the ‘cocktail mehendi’ and often features a romantic ball dance by the groom and bride. “Some don’t even mind kissing at the end of the dance. This would have never been part of a wedding function a few years ago,’’ says a Mumbai wedding planner.

Where’s the fusion wedding trend coming from? “Well, it’s largely a result of the ‘hat ke syndrome,’’ says wedding planner Ratna Malhotra. “Everybody wants to be different and get noticed.

But though dissidents may raise disapproving eyebrows, the fusion folk couldn’t care less. The father of a bride and Nepeansea Road resident argues, “The idea is to make the wedding day memorable. Now, if cutting out a few rituals and allowing the first family to enjoy themselves achieves that, what’s wrong with it? After all, no one wants theirs guests to yawn through the wedding.’’

The decision to carve out a separate state of Telangana, which will take the total number of states in the Union to 29, comes at the end of a 40-year-old struggle for a distinct identity.

This comes after a gap of nine years when three new states were carved out. Jharkhand split from Bihar on November 15, 2000 to become the 28th state while Uttarakhand split from UP on November 9 and Chattisgarh was created on November 1 the same year.

Andhra Pradesh has 23 districts, including the state capital Hyderabad, in three regions - coastal Andhra (nine), Rayalaseema (four) and Telangana (ten).

Since its inception in 2001, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has been fighting for creation of a separate Telangana state. Telangana region now accounts for 119 of the 294 seats in the Assembly and 17 of the 42 Lok Sabha members.

Telangan region comprises Hyderabad, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Medak, Warangal, Rangareddy, Nalgonda, Khammam and Mahbubnagar.

The demand for a separate state began in 1969 but the Congress then had stoutly opposed any move for additional linguistic states.

Disillusioned by it, firebrand Congress leader M Channa Reddy broke away and formed the Telangana Praja Samithi (Telangan Popular Association) in 1969.

The first movement of a separate Telangana state started met with a gory end in 1971.As a counter, the 'Jai Andhra' agitation was taken up in 1972-73.

BJP tried to spearhead the movement in 1998 but failed to keep its promise as coalition partner Telugu Desam Party opposed the move.

In 2004, Congress forged a pre-poll alliance with TRS while promising to work for a separate Telangana. When TRS did not see it fructifying, it withdrew support two years later.

Last year, TDP announced its support for Telangana.

The Centre's nod came after TRS Chief K Chandrashekhar Rao went on an indefinite fast-unto-death which he broke after 11 days yesterday amid heightened tensions in the state.

The Centre's decision may fuel demands for separate 'Andhra', separate 'Rayalaseema' and even a separate 'north-coastal Andhra'.

Topping it all is the demand for making (Greater) Hyderabad a Union Territory. The TRS has made it clear that Hyderabad has to be part of Telangana.

Another demand is the creation of 'Greater Rayalaseema'.Rayalaseema region comprises four districts: Anantapur, Kadapa, Kurnool and Chittoor.It accounts for 52 of the Assembly seats and 8 MPs.

Leaders of this region have now raised a demand for including Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore and Prakasam districts in Rayalaseema, thereby making it a 'Greater' state.

SPS Nellore and Prakasam districts are now part of coastal Andhra, that stretches up to Srikakulam bordering Orissa, along the Bay of Bengal coast.

People of north-coastal Andhra - which consists of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts – are demanding that the three districts be formed into a separate state in the event of bifurcating AP.

Prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps can be practiced

1. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water or Listerine. *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive, and powerful preventative method.

2. Blow the nose hard once a day and swab both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water. This is very effective in bringing down viral population.

3. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamins C and D. If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

4. Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Obama touts partnership with India

President Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh agreed Tuesday to team up and tackle a checklist of economic, nuclear, security and environmental challenges.

Obama welcomed the Indian leader to the White House on Tuesday in what is the first state visit of his presidency.

The two men had what they called a productive sit-down meeting before briefing reporters.

'I believe that the relationship between the United States and India will be one of the defining partnerships of the 21st century' and will reflect the 'strategic dialogue' between the countries, Obama said, calling India 'the world's largest multiethnic democracy' with a fast-growing economy."

Kuchipudi at Yale University by Samarpita Bajpai

"I've been lucky enough to see some excellent, world-class performances so far, and Samarpita Bajpai was no exception. She did a Kuchipudi dance recital, which is one of the seven important Indian classical styles (one of the rarest ones, actually), and she is a master at it. It was great that she also explained what each dance was about before doing it, and she was so well-spoken and entertaining, that even the kids in the audience were completely enthralled (don't you love parents who drag their kids to cultural events?! Trust me kids, it may want to make you tear your hair out now but you'll thank them later!). We were also really lucky to have Samarpita perform an almost-extinct form of this temple dance (used to be performed in the 14th/15th centuries), called Simhanandini, where the dancer paints a picture using some really intricate footwork (in this case, a lion, which was what the goddess Durga used to ride on). She does tour all over the US and India, so if you get a chance to catch one of her shows, and you love dance, don't think about it - just go for it."

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
As you may all know, our Sangam activities are planned and organized by an Executive Committee of seven members elected annually. Three of them are officers – President, Treasurer, and Secretary – and are elected from the members of the previous committees. The remaining four are coordinators – Cultural Coordinator, Communications Coordinator, Food Coordinator, and Movie Coordinator – and are elected from the general membership. This announcement is our Call for Nominations to elect these four coordinators to serve on the 2010 executive committee.
1. Cultural Coordinator: This person should be able to plan and organize various cultural programs throughout the year. The cultural coordinator should be capable of identifying talents within our community and elsewhere and brings those talents to our stage programs. He/she will serve as the MC of all stage programs and should be able to talk to a large group of people with ease. Eloquence and excellent people skills are essential in discharging the duties as a cultural coordinator. The cultural coordinator is also expected to contact potential sponsors and generate additional income for the events.

2. Communications Coordinator: The principal qualities of this person include excellent written skills. The communications coordinator prepares and sends out announcement of upcoming events. A well-drafted announcement always brings a good turn out to the programs. He/she is also responsible for editing and publishing Sangam Newsletters. The content of elegant and well-laid-out newsletters enhances the image of any organization. The person is also expected to contact local retailers and restaurants, get advertisements, and include in the Newsletter.

3. Food Coordinator: Being a connoisseur of fine food is an art in its own right and our food coordinator is not only a gourmet but a fine organizer and can do a great job, minimizing cost without compromising quality. Since food is an important part of any gathering, the food coordinator often reaps wonderful praises from the community.
4. Movie Coordinator: This person must have impeccable ability in identifying good tamil movies that are entertaining and thought provoking. He/she must be able to talk to and negotiate with agents for timely release and for best price. The person must be a movie lover and his/her enthusiasm must be infectious.
We are confident that many of you have the interest and skills mentioned above. You can do it. Sangam is your organization. Your effort and involvement can significantly enhance the image of our organization. Please send your nominations today even though we can accept nominations until November 15, 2009. If you prefer, you can mention the specific coordinator position to which you are nominating. Only self-nominations are accepted. Also, tell your friends and community members about this announcement.

Hema Sharma started her singing lessons at the age of 6 and learned under several musicians including Savithri Ramamoorthy (carnatic music), Akila Shankar (Bhajans), Saidi Tevaram Natarajan (tevaram and thirupugazh), Oothukadu brothers (oothukadu songs on Krishna), and Krishnaveni Ramalingam (little bit of everything). As a child she participated in a number of bhajan concerts at temples for religious festivals and other celebrations. Now, Hema teaches music to a few students. She has a strong base in rhythm because of her Bharathanatyam training under the Late Gnanaprakasam, Sri Adyar Laksman, and the Dhananjayans. She has been teaching dancing in the Kansas City area for the past 20 years. Mukundan Srinivasan will support her on the violin.

Amitabh Choudhury will accompany Hema on the Tabla.

Five Days Of Diwali

Deewali is a festival of joy, splendor, brightness and happiness. It is the festival of lights and is celebrated with great enthusiasm by all Indians all over the world. The uniqueness of this festival is its harmony of five varied philosophies, with each day to a special thought or ideal. People celebrate each of its five days of festivities with true understanding, it will uplift and enrich the lives.

The first day of Diwali: Dhanteras
The first day of Diwali is called Dhanvantari Triodasi or Dhanwantari Triodasi also called Dhan Theras. It is in fact the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksh, the dark forthnight of the month of Kartik. On this day, Lord Dhanwantari came out of the ocean with Ayurvedic for mankind. This day marks the beginning of Deepawali celebrations.

On this day at sunset, Hindus should bathe and offer a lighted deeya with Prasad (sweets offered at worship time) to Yama Raj, the Lord of Death and pray for protection from untimely death. This offering should be made near a Tulsi tree, the Holy Basil or any other sacred tree that one might have in their yard.

The second day of Diwali: Choti Diwali
The second day of dipawali is called Narak Chaturdasi. On this day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon Narakasur and made the world free from fear. On this day, one should massage the body with oil to relieve it of tiredness, bathe and rest so that Diwali can be celebarated with vigour and devotion.

On this night, Yama Deeya should not be lit. The Shastras (Laws of Dharma) declares that Yama Deeya should be offered on Triodasi night with Prasad. Some people mistook it to mean that because Yama Deeya was lit on that night, that it should always be lit on the night before deepavali. This is absolutely not true. It is advisable that one consults with a learned Pandit or Hindu Astrologer for proper guidance on this matter.

The third day of Diwali: Lakshmi Puja on Diwali
This is the day when worship unto Mother Lakshmi is performed. Hindus cleanse themselves and join with their families and their Pandit (priest) and they worship the divine Goddess Lakshmi to achieve the blessings of wealth and prosperity, the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

The fourth day of Diwali: Padwa & Govardhan Puja
On this day, Govardhan Pooja is performed. Many thousands of years ago, Lord Krishna caused the people of Vraja to perform Govardhan Pooja. From then on, every year Hindus worship Govardhan to honour that first Pooja done by the people of Vraja.

The fifth day of Diwali: Bhai Duj
The fifth day of the Diwali is called Bhratri Dooj. This is the day after Goverdhan Pooja is performed and normally two days after Diwali day. It is a day dedicated to sisters. Many moons ago, in the Vedic era, Yama (Yamraj, the Lord of death) visited his sister Yamuna on this day. He gave his sister a Vardhan (a boon) that whosoever visits her on this day shall be liberated from all sins. They will achieve Moksha or final emancipation. From then on, brothers visit their sisters on this day to enquire of their welfare.

This day marks the end of the five days of deepavali celebrations. This is also known as Bhai fota among Bengalis. Bhai fota is an event especially among Bengalis when the sister prays for her brother's safety, success and well being.

Other voices: A generation in jeopardy

Over the Thanksgiving holidays, we watched in horror the atrocities in Mumbai afflicted by 10 young men. I watched the video clips of two terrorists, cradling AK-47s, calmly firing at passengers at the train station.

They were driven by a cold rage fueled by manipulative mullahs, who harbor an evergreen grudge, imagined or real, that they pass on with care as family heirlooms. They are replacing like a malignant cancer the next generation's youthful optimism and innocence with hatred and rage. The youths then prematurely extinguish their lives, only to pass this heirloom to yet another generation and extinguish another set of youth just blossoming.

Another young man, a senior engineer at Yahoo India, was arrested for using his technological skills to help coordinate bomb attacks in Bangalore, Delhi and Ahmedabad in India.

At about the same time, a couple of kids in Kolkota were in trouble, too. They had used their technical skills to create a knockoff of the board game Scrabble, which they called 'Scrabulous.' It brought in as much as $25,000 per month. Hasbro, the owner of Scrabble, promptly sued them in multiple jurisdictions.

The young men at the Mumbai Taj Hotel attacked for more than 60 hours, taking on elite Indian commandos until they were overcome.

Meanwhile, the kids from Kolkota promptly went to work renaming their product 'Lexulous' and using their skills, and probably more than 60 hours, to come up with a better and more creative product called 'Wordscraper,' thumbing their noses at Hasbro.

Why did the young man working for Yahoo India, earning above-average wages, choose to risk his career and life for a cause unknown? Why did the young men from Pakistan spend a year training to execute a fairly complex operation? How were they financed in a nearly bankrupt Pakistan, a country that was bailed out by IMF few weeks ago?

Are petrodollars generated by our gas guzzlers making their way to the madrassas in Pakistan? Is this gas guzzler karma of our own making?

The young men from Pakistan knew how to use global positioning systems and satellite phones and how to navigate a boat. They could swim 10 miles, if required, in the open ocean. Did they consider other productive causes, such as Pakistan's Olympic swim or triathlon teams?

Meanwhile, the kids from Kolkota are on the way to becoming millionaires, using similar amounts of efforts but with different application of mind and skills.

I wonder about the difference in behavior among these young men. Was it the upbringing at home, the peer pressure of their friends or indoctrination? It is a matter of choice, not just by the kids, but by their parents, their society and their government.

That choice will impact the rest of the world.

Out of a world population of 6 billion, 2.8 billion are younger than 25. Ninety percent of them are in developing countries. They are at an age when they can be influenced, trained and molded. But into what? Pakistan has nearly 60 million people younger than 29, with about 40 million between ages 15 and 29. With another 650 million young people in India by 2015, will that region become a ticking bomb or a fast-growing emerging market?

Going back to the variation in behavior between the two sets of young people, the difference is at home, at school and the peer group. It is the duty of every parent to ensure their kids are kids and don't get indoctrinated into anything other than reaching for success and growing into a contributing citizen.

That is the compact we need to make with ourselves. In the long term it will eliminate outrageous acts such as those in Mumbai. We are better off if that part of the world develops a harmonious society where youths see hope and joy in their current life, rather than in an afterlife, and where troubled youths are ambitious hackers with computers, rather than AK-47s.

Nobel Prize for Chemistry: Desi Professor in US

Dr Ramakrishnan, known as 'Venki' to his colleagues, became the thirteenth individual Nobel winner from Cambridge University's Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) when he was given the award.

The LMB has a rich scientific history, counting among its alumni former prize-winners Francis Crick and Jim Watson, who discovered the DNA double helix in 1953, and two-time Nobel Prize winner Fred Sanger (1958 and 1980).

Dr Ramakrishnan's research into ribosomes, structures inside cells that transform DNA coding into physical reality, marked the LMB's first success since 2002, when John Sulston, Sydney Brenner and Robert Horovitz won the award for physiology or medicine.

His work has been used to develop new antibiotics which kill germs by blocking their ribosomes, while keeping the patient's ribosomes intact.

He was awarded the prize along with Ada Yorath of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and Thomas Steitz of Yale University, who also made important discoveries in the same field.

Dr Ramakrishnan, who is an Indian-born American citizen, celebrated his victory at the LMB yesterday with a champagne party organised by a technician who has been throwing Nobel parties since the 1950s.

Dr Richard Henderson, a former director who still works at the LMB, told The Independent: 'I remember once coming back to the lab after Fred Sanger won his second Nobel [in 1980]. It was 7.30pm and there were at least a hundred people in the canteen - and Fred was the only person still standing.'

Other LMB prize winners are John Walker (1997), Georges Köhler and César Milstein (1984), Aaron Klug (1982), Max Perutz and John Kendrew (1962)."

India Association of Kansas City (www.iakc.org) is inviting nominations for the 2010 Executive Committee and 1-2 new trustees. Nominations will be accepted through October 20th 2009 after which the Nomination Committee nominates a President for the upcoming year. The Nominating Committee then helps the President form his Executive Committee for that year.

Paying Not to see a movie?

After sitting through 3 and 1/2 hours through Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Rashee?, some movie watchers, apparently piqued by a bad movie and a big length at that, some students at the Mangal Cinema in Indore resorted to paying the next in line people to leave the theatre queues from watching the movie by luring them upto double of the maximum ticket price - the condition? Skip the movie 'What's Your Rashee'.

As soon as they came out of the theater, they went up to the people standing in line to see the next show. When the future movie watchers did not leave right away, all the students then pooled money to offer to the people in line. Its not exactly known how many people actually took the offer.

TAMIR is an actress, poet and playwright, author and performer of one-woman shows, “In the Land of Israel” and “I Belong Elsewhere.” Her CD of devotional readings “Poetry on Prayer” is an interfaith celebration of the human spirit, comprising of poetry from around the world, celebrating the unifying theme of prayer. It brings to life onstage great literature that grew out of the common experience and yearning for that which always IS. * Employ fewer than 25 full-time employees (or full-time equivalents)
* Operate a for-profit business for three (3) or more years
* Be located within the Greater Kansas City area

25 Under 25 ® Awards

Awards Criteria & Selection Process

Nominations are accepted from the business community from August 1 to mid-October each year. Qualified nominees complete an application and provide additional support materials that are reviewed by a panel of third-party judges from the business community. The panel of judges reviews the applicants and selects the final 25 honorees according to the following:

Financial stability
Ability to overcome obstacles/adversity/challenges
Community involvement/service
Distinguishing or defining characteristics/qualities
Company vision

Nominations for the 2010 awards close on October 9, 2009.

The 25 finalists are announced in mid-December, and events are scheduled throughout the following February and March to honor the finalists. Honorees are profiled in a special 25 Under 25® supplement in the February issue of KC Small Business and invited to be guests on the “Smart Companies” radio show. In addition, a pre-gala dinner is held for the honorees in mid-February. The events will culminate in a black tie optional awards dinner and gala held on February 27, 2010, featuring a cocktail reception, Wall of Fame, dinner and awards presentation.

Asha Fundraiser: What A Show!

The Asha Fundraiser that was conducted on September 12, 2009 in Overland Park literally made history.

This became the only second show in the history of Kansas City desi community that would fill an auditorium so completely and so enthusiastically.

The only such show prior to this that filled an auditorium completely was the Shaan Concert (organized and presented by yours truly - KCdesi.COM) back in 2006 at the JCCC Carlsen Center.

And now, Asha for Education has repeated history. The inaugural event of the Asha for Education chapter in KC has raised the awareness of the cause for which Asha is fighting for in a very high measure.

There were many highlights of the show in terms of who participated and how they contributed - but the most apt way to summarize everything is the way Viswamohan puts it - 'Volunteerism Redefined'. Wow, what the show revealed was how a community can become close-knit in an instant for a great cause.

KCdesi is extremely proud that it being an integral Media Partner to the organization of this show from the get go. We join entire Kansas City in wishing the best to the Asha organization.

Quick Report : KC Hawks win the Midwest Cricket League 2009

Captain Mohsin Manzoor and his Hawks beat the UMKC Team by over 90 runs in the Finals of the 2009 Midwest Cricket League Cup held at the Swope Park on Sept 12, 2009. While UMKC was hoping to retain the Championship by winning it a third time, KC Hawks had lost twice to the UMKC team and wanted to win the Cup - their first time ever. Successful Anand Mela @ Hindu Temple

As the President Sai Chimalakonda puts it, it turned out be a "huge and surprising" success. They did not anticipate that the HTCC Parking Lot would become "so full", said Sridhar Harohalli. Chairman of the Board Ramesh Lokre agreed that the Executive Committee had 'done what it takes' to make the Mela a success. Lot of stalls were put and the money from the wares that were sold was donated to the general building fund of HTCC. More details from the event will follow.

Colors Of India is a fundraising spectacular presentation by the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Asha for Education. (Read more about Asha)

Colors of India will be an event that truly highlights the glamour and grandeur of India, an evening filled with entertainment, that showcases the talents of the Greater Kansas City area, a festival that celebrates India’s rich and colorful cultural diversity by bringing the entire Indian community together.

The entertainment extravaganza will have around 700 viewers, about 50 participants and over 30 volunteers. The show takes a broad peek into contemporary India with innovative Fusion Dances presented by area’s major dance schools, a scintillating Musical Concert performed by an award winning group and an enchanting Fashion/Bridal Show presented by a prominent Indian designer displaying vibrant Indian bridal costumes blended with contemporary designs.
