The Science Olympiad team at California Trail Junior High School has retained its state title and will be returning to the National Science Olympiad.
The national competition is May 22 at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign. In the 2009 national competition, California Trail finished 38th.
The Kansas Science Olympiad was April 2 at Wichita State University where 30 high school and 30 middle school and junior high teams competed. The top two teams in each division advanced to the national competition.
In addition to California Trail’s first-place finish, Oregon Trail Junior High was third and Frontier Trail Junior High was ninth.
Among high schools, Olathe East was fourth and Olathe North was seventh.
California Trail students who placed in the top three in the 23 individual events:
* Kavya Shivashankar and Marisha Madhira, first in Anatomy.
* Elise Hickman and Thomas Schukai, first in Bio-Process Lab.
* Natalie Alton, Mary Mitchell and Justin Lee, first in Experimental Design.
*Ryan Schools and Adam Khan, first in Fossils.
*Adam Owens, first in Junkyard Challenge.
*Cyrus Duong and Thomas Schukai, first in Physical Science Lab.
*Kavya Shivashankar and Juhi Thaman, first in Science Crime Busters.
*Cyrus Duong and Mark Vrablic, first in Wright Stuff.
*Natalie Alton and Stephanie Songer, first in Write It Do It.
*Elise Hickman and Marisha Madhira, second in Disease Detectives.
*Kavya Shivashankar and Elise Hickman, second in Ecology.
*Cyrus Duong and Adam Khan, second in Shock Value.
*Ryan Schools and Juhi Thaman, second in Solar System.
*Alex VonBevern and Cyrus Duong, third in Elevated Bridge.
*Ryan Schools and Adam Owens, third in Meteorology.
*Justin Lee and Ryan Schools, third in Ornithology.
